Alternative Treatments for Wrinkles
Alternative treatments for
Wrinkles have been used by people in other
cultures for many years. Some treatments are very
effective for some people. Others may only work because
the patient believes they will work, much like the way
placebos sometimes work in medical experiments. However,
we believe that the more you know about the options, the more
you will be able to make intelligent, informed decisions about
the medical treatment, which may be right for you and your
particular medical conditions.

About Wrinkles
Wrinkles – the
dreaded, but nearly inevitable friend of increasing age.
Wrinkles are caused by many different processes. Often, as
we age, the underlying layer of our skin begins to thin.
Simultaneously, the fat beneath this layer begins to
deteriorate and as a result the fibers that usually hold and
retain our skin begin to weaken. As this occurs, our skin
becomes less elastic and begins to sag, forming familiar
wrinkles. While wrinkling is a natural and exceptionally
common process, it often can cause significant angst in
persons, especially those who believe it is occurring
prematurely. Thankfully, for all of us there are numerous
ways that wrinkles can be prevented and diminished.
- Most importantly, avoid over-exposure
to the sun. The main cause of wrinkles is rays from the
sun. It is not the light that harms our skin, but rather
the ultraviolet (UV) rays that come with the visible
light from the sun. UV rays penetrate our skin and
damage the same collagen under our skin that holds it in
place. In addition, it can cause skin cancer. To avoid
both of these effects, sunscreen should always be worn
when out under the sun. The sunburn protection factor,
or SPF, of the sunscreen should be at least 15. Further,
it is best to avoid the times where the sun’s rays peak
in strength, from around 11 to 3. This advice may be
increasingly important as ozone depletion continues and
the amount of UV rays that reach Earth’s surface are
increasing. If you are wondering, tanning salons are
equally as harmful as they use the same ultraviolet rays
to tan the body.
- Stop
smoking. Avoid second-hand smoke as well. Smoking is
shown to be a huge predictor of wrinkles. Smoking is
believed to damage collagen itself, decrease blood flow
to the skin, and the constant facial movements used in
the act of smoking all contribute to more, deeper
wrinkles.
- Like smoking, pollution can have a
detrimental effect on your skin. Ozone in the air is
particularly bad and depletes essential vitamins within
or skin.
- Avoid repetitive facial expressions
that constrict and wrinkle your face to the extent
possible. As children, many of us were told that if we
held our facial expression for too long it could get
stuck. This is true, at least for the wrinkles within
these expressions. When we frown, squint, think, glare
or make any other facial action our skin wrinkles
naturally. Unfortunately, this tendency does increase
the likelihood that we will develop those same wrinkles,
or worsen them. Therefore, investigate your most common
facial expressions, both conscious, and unconscious if
you can manage, in a mirror when you get a chance. If
you realize that you are furrowing your brow a great
deal, or unnecessarily, or exaggerating other common
wrinkle lines it is best to be conscious of this fact
and modify it to the extent possible.
- Try to maintain a steady weight.
Losing and gaining weight repeatedly stretches the skin
and makes wrinkles more common. Maintaining a regular
diet and exercise routine is the best way to accomplish
this. If you are overweight, it is of course best to
lose weight, but try not to gain it back!
- Exercise. In addition to help in
maintaining a consistent weight, exercise strengthens
our skin.
- Make sure you keep your skin
moisturized. Moisturize your skin with a product of your
choice. To note, there are many all natural moisturizers
available. In addition, it is beneficial to avoid
activities that dry out the skin, such as over-washing.
- When sleeping it may be best to avoid
wrinkling your skin against the pillow. This advice may
seem trivial, until we think of how many hours in our
life are spent asleep. Those who consistently sleep on
their side or stomach often have their head smashed
against the pillow. Over time, the constant wrinkles
that form may begin to appear even when we are not
sleeping. Therefore, and if possible, it is advisable to
sleep on the back. Thankfully, sleeping on the back has
been shown to be the best position to sleep in for
numerous other reasons as well.
