Alternative Treatments for Parkinson’s Disease
Alternative treatments for
a Parkinson’s Disease have been used by people in other
cultures for many years. Some treatments are very
effective for some people. Others may only work because
the patient believes they will work, much like the way
placebos sometimes work in medical experiments. However,
we believe that the more you know about the options, the more
you will be able to make intelligent, informed decisions about
the medical treatment, which may be right for you and your
particular medical conditions.

About Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder that is
characterized by the deterioration of the central nervous
system in an individual. This gradual deterioration impairs
normal movement of the body and is often signaled by
tremors. Speech can become difficult, and in later stages of
the disorder cognitive problems can emerge. Parkinson’s is
generally onset with increasing age and affects those over
the age of 50; however, Parkinson’s is also shown to be
caused by secondary factors such as head trauma, use of
drugs and other disorders as well. Parkinson’s disease is an
incredibly demanding disorder on both the individual
affected and his or her friends and family. Support groups,
patient and family education are often necessary and can
help both the individual affected and those around them cope
with the disorder. Unfortunately, Parkinson’s disease is
still not well understood within the medical profession and
thus, its treatment and home remedies are still somewhat
limited. Nonetheless, there are a few natural practices that
can greatly help to reduce the symptoms and perhaps delay
the onset of Parkinson’s disease.
- The nutritional supplement, coenzyme Q10, is currently
going through trials and its efficacy in slowing the onset
of Parkinson’s. So far, clinical results have suggested that
dosages of 1200 mg are effective in delaying the onset of
debilitating symptoms for those diagnosed with Parkinson’s
disease. Care, however, should be used with coenzyme Q10, as
its long-term effects are still unclear.

- To maintain flexibility and mobility, physical exercise is
very important. Exercise also helps to deliver oxygen and
glucose to the brain. For those who can, yoga, Tai chi and
dance can be very beneficial with additional mental health
benefits. Physical therapy can also be useful in directing
and prescribing exercises for those unsure of where to
start. Some educational videos are also available online,
and one specifically recommended for use with Parkinson’s
disease
is available here.
- Simple exercises, such as simply moving food around in the
mouth and hand exercises such as
those available here are
also very helpful according to many doctors.
- Acupuncture and
massage therapy have shown to help relieve
muscle stiffness and soreness associated with Parkinson’s
disease.
- A common dietary alternative treatment is the consumption
of vegetable (oftentimes carrot) juice once or twice daily.
