Alternative Treatments for Asthma
Alternative treatments for
asthma have been used by people in other
cultures for many years. Some treatments are very
effective for some people. Others may only work because
the patient believes they will work, much like the way
placebos sometimes work in medical experiments. However,
we believe that the more you know about the options, the more
you will be able to make intelligent, informed decisions about
the medical treatment, which may be right for you and your
particular medical conditions.

About Asthma:
Asthma is the
constriction of an individual’s airways or the presence of
excess mucus that results in difficulty breathing, coughing
and tightness in the chest. The condition can be caused by
an individual’s environment and/or illnesses such as the
common cold. Prevalence of asthma is continuing to rise in
today’s environment that is increasingly removed from the
natural environment and air containing pollution particles.
Thankfully many home remedies and environmental changes can
help to reduce asthma’s prevalence and recurrence amongst
affected individuals.
- Try to ensure that your living area
is clean as possible. Asthma can be caused through the
waste of creatures that rely on unsanitary conditions,
such as dust mites and cockroaches. Further, mold spores
can also trigger asthma.
- Examine the personal hygiene products
that you use. Almost all hygiene products, including
toilet paper, sun cream and hair gel are scented. Any
type of scented products can trigger asthma in an
affected individual, and consequently unscented products
may be a better purchase.
- In urban areas and other locations
close to traffic, and especially those with noticeably
high levels of smog, asthma and other respiratory
problems are increasingly prevalent and more severe. It
is likely worthwhile to avoid such triggers and causes
of asthma when possible, and to the extent that asthma
debilitates an individual, consider relocating to a more
rural environment.
- Smoking understandably exacerbates
asthmatic problems. Second-hand smoke and living in a
residence with a smoker also have the same negative
effects. To the extent possible, it is beneficial to not
smoke and avoid being around those who are smoking and
being in areas where smoke or smoking residue is
present. To Stop
smoking read this!
- Cold, dry air is more likely to
trigger asthma attacks, and thus cold air should be
avoided when possible. To help in the winter months, a
scarf can be warn over one’s mouth and even nose to help
warm air before it is inhaled.
- Avoid pain relievers that have
aspirin. Airways can easily become sensitive to aspirin
and worsen asthmatic symptoms.
- Try to exercise regularly as possible
as exercise has been shown to strengthen airways and
reduce the effects of asthma.
- Reducing stress from one’s lifestyle
has been shown to lessen and reduce the symptoms and
recurrence of asthma.
- The use of air ionizers or HEPA
filters has been shown to cleanse the air with which we
breathe and to help those whose asthma is triggered by
airborne allergens.
- Taking an antacid before bedtime has
helped many persons as it controls a stomach reflux that
can be shown to cause asthma.
